In the meantime, here are my current and recent project:

Books:
Documentaries:
  • The Life & Times of Video Games | solo project; it's a documentary-style podcast about the ideas that changed video games -- and the people and stories behind those ideas.
  • FPS: First Person Shooter | 4.5-hour film about the history of first-person shooters, featuring 48 talking-head contributors, with an emphasis on the 90s golden age. I was Producer/Co-Writer, with my fellow author David L. Craddock as Director/Co-Writer and Christopher Stratton as Editor/Co-Director. Exec produced by Robin Block, head of CREATORVC, the studio behind In Search of Darkness and In Search of Tomorrow, and now also Aliens Expanded.
  • TerrorBytes: The Evolution of Horror Gaming | Episodic series digging into five different areas of horror gaming history — survival horror, licensed horror, FMV horror, indie horror, and "cursed and controversial" horror games. I was writer and director with horror obsessive Daniel Richardson as producer and project lead and my fellow Aussie Connor O'Keane as editor. I'm pleased to say it was critically-acclaimed — with glowing remarks in all published reviews. Another CREATORVC production. Episode 1 is free on YouTube, but you'll have to buy the rest from the official website.
  • NEW PROJECT! - Passport to Adventure: The SCUMM Story | This one's my concept, and if it goes ahead it'll be made by the same team as TerrorBytes. From my synopsis: Passport to Adventure: The SCUMM Story will peer behind the troop of three-headed monkeys and into the world's largest ball of twine to discover the inner workings of both the games and the engine that revolutionized a genre. As guided by 20+ interviews with LucasArts alumni, notable contemporary and present-day adventure game developers, and more, it will celebrate the greatest moments, the inventive satire, and the ingenious innovations, and remember (and reflect upon) a glorious, all-too-brief era where the creatives got to call the shots.

In development as of January 2026, with production to follow later in the year if there's enough audience demand for it. You can help make it happen by joining the waitlist at scummdoc.com and following us on Bluesky (I'm personally running that account).
Freelance:
  • I'm not taking on much freelance work at the moment, but you can check out my portfolio to see past articles (and contact me if you'd like to hire me for editing work or commission a new piece). I've done lots of writing about games, technology, and science, all spread across a few dozen different corporate clients and media publications, so you're sure to find something interesting there.
  • While most of my freelance work has been in writing, I've also done copyediting of whitepapers for Telstra, audio editing and mastering for CREATORVC, and book editing for Chaim Gingold's Building SimCity. Here's a testimonial from Chaim: "Richard, thank you so much! Your editorial input and coaching are top-notch, and [you] leveled up the book and my writing skills."
